How to print your own kanga
You have a design you love; now you want it on cloth. Here is what to know before you print.
Free to design and share. Pre-filled with “Pole pole ndio mwendo”; change it to anything.
1. The file
JINA’s Print-ready fabric file is 8858 × 5906 px with 150 dpi embedded: exactly 150 × 100 cm, the classic kanga size. 150 dpi is the usual resolution for printed fabric. There is no hem allowance, so tell your printer if you want one.
2. The fabric
Ask for a light, soft cotton (poplin or voile) for a traditional kanga feel. For tailoring or furnishings, a heavier cotton or cotton-linen works well.
3. Where to print
- Online fabric printers that accept custom-size uploads print and ship worldwide.
- Local textile printers, common in Mombasa, Nairobi, Dar es Salaam and beyond, are great for group orders. Bring the file on a USB stick and ask for a sample first.
4. Colour
Screens glow and fabric doesn’t, so colours on cloth look slightly deeper. Always order a swatch or a single test piece before a group order.
5. Care
Wash printed cotton cold, inside out, and dry in the shade to keep colours bright.
Questions
Can I print it bigger?
The file is made for 150 × 100 cm. Printing it much larger will soften the edges; your printer can repeat it for longer lengths instead.
Can I print it on other things?
Yes: cushions, tote bags, wall hangings. The HD Pack also includes an A3 300 dpi art print.
