Diani, Kenya

Diani: the coast behind the cloth

Diani sits on Kenya’s south coast, in Kwale County, about 30 km south of Mombasa. Its colours are in every JINA palette.

Free to design and share. Pre-filled with “Karibu Diani”; change it to anything.

Reef and tide

A long white-sand beach sheltered by a coral reef, with turquoise water at low tide. Our Reef and Low tide palettes come from here.

Forests and monkeys

Diani is home to the Angolan colobus, a black-and-white monkey you will see crossing the road on rope “colobridges”. Nearby, the sacred Kaya Kinondo forest is one of the Mijikenda Kaya forests recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage. Our Colobus and Mangrove palettes are a nod to both.

Two winds

The coast lives by the monsoons: the Kaskazi from the north-east and the Kusi from the south. For centuries they carried dhows, trade and ideas across the Indian Ocean. That trade is part of the kanga’s own story, which is why our palettes are named Kaskazi sunset and Kusi night.

Kangas on the line

From Ukunda market to Msambweni, kangas hang on lines outside shops, each with its saying flapping in the wind. JINA started with the question: what would you say?
